Why do people think the writer is mad?
Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad. I live near an airport and passing planes can be heard night and day.

（1）passing 是現在分詞，作形容詞用，表示“經過的”、“過往的”：He stopped a passing car.
他擋住了一輛過往汽車。
He forgot the man with passing time.

（2）night and day是固定短語，意為“日日夜夜”、“夜以繼日”：He thought of the matter night and day.

2．The airport was built years ago, but for some reason it could not be used then. 機場是許多年前建的，但由于某種原因當時未能啟用。
（1）years 前面不加確定的數詞時，一般表示“許多年”，weeks等的用法與它相似：
He left the city years ago.
他多年前就離開了這座城市。
I have not seen him for weeks.
我已經有好幾個星期沒見他了。
（2）some 在這里不表示“一些”，而表示“某個”、“某種”等：
I'll tell you someday.

3．…it came into use. ……機場開始使用了。
come into use 為固定短語，表示“開始被使用”：
When did the train come into use?

The road came into use last month.

4．Over a hundred people must have been driven away from their homes by the noise. 有一百多人肯定是被噪音逼得已經棄家遠去。
情態動詞 must +be表示根據事實所作的推論，這在第1冊第127課已經講過。在這句話中，must+完成時態表示對過去某事的推測：
This pen is John's. He must have been here.
這枝鋼筆是約翰的。他一定來過這里。
5．I am one of the few people left. 我是少數留下來的人中的一個。
（1）one of表示特指的一群人/一些東西中的一個，后面的名詞用復數：
One of the girls standing over there is Tim's sister.
在那些站在那兒的女孩當中有一個是蒂姆的姐姐/妹妹。
You can take one of these bags.
你可以從這些提包中拿走一個。
（2）left相當于who are left(by the others)。即其他人走了以后而留下了他們。

1．drive
（1）vt.，vi. 駕駛，駕車：
You must have been driving at seventy miles an hour.

Mary drives(her car) very slowly.

（2）vt. 趕，驅趕，圍趕（獵物、敵人等）：
With the help of two dogs, he drove the sheep down the mountain.
在兩只牧羊犬的幫助下，他把羊從山上趕了下來。
（3）vt. 逼迫，迫使：
Aeroplanes are slowly driving me mad.
飛機正在慢慢地把我逼瘋。
The death of all her children has driven her mad.

2．home與house
home 一般譯為“家”、“家庭”，著重指所居住的人，常有愛、溫暖、舒適、安全等隱含意義。house通常譯為“房子”、“房屋”、“住宅”，指的是建筑物。試體會它們的區別：
They live in a large house.
他們住在一所大房子里。（不可用home）
My father is at home now.
我父親現在在家。（不可用 house/at house）
Tom must be somewhere in the house.
湯姆肯定在這屋子里的某個地方。（不可用home）
