縮寫詞又稱首字母縮略詞，將幾個詞的首字母加在一起合成一字，全部用大寫字母拼成，從而代替一組冗長復雜的詞或詞組。這樣，既可節省版面標題詞數，又能更好地提示新聞內容，使人讀來頗感簡潔易記，還可使版面編排減少沉悶之感。例如：

　　CPPCC Head Meets Returned Overseas Students In Beijing. (CPPCC=The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference中國人民政治協商會議)

　　全國政協主席在京接見歸國留學生。

　　Aids Victims Surging In Us. (Aids=Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome：后天免疫缺損綜合癥，即“艾滋病”)

　　美“艾滋病”患者激增。

　　Plo Says Big Israeli Drive Ahead. (Plo=Palestine Liberation Organization：巴勒斯坦解放組織)

　　巴解組織稱以色列即將大舉進攻。

　　從以上數則實例中不難發現，英語新聞標題中經常出現的縮寫詞主要分為三類：

　　1、組織機構等專有名稱，如上述例句中的cppcc (全國政協)和plo(巴解組織)。又如：

　　UNESCO=United Nations Educational, Scientific And Cultural Organization(聯合國教科文組織)
　　IMF=International Monetary Fund(國際貨幣基金組織)
　　ASEAN=Association Of Southeast Asian Nations(東南亞國家聯盟；“東盟”)
　　GATT=General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade(關貿總協定)
　　WTO=World Trade Organization(世界貿易組織)
　　OPE=Organization Of Petroleum Exporting Countries(石油輸出國組織；“歐佩克”)
　　PLO=Palestine Liberation Organization(巴勒斯坦解放組織；“巴解”)
　　IOC=International Olympic Committee(國際奧林匹克委員會)
　　NASA=National Aeronautics And Space Administration[(美國)國家宇航局]

　　2、常見事物的名稱，如上述例句中的aids (艾滋病)。又如：

　　ABM=Anti-Ballistic Missile(反彈道導彈)

　　3、表示人們的職業、職務或職稱的名詞，如 Mp(議員)。又如：

　　PA=Personal Assistant(私人助理)
